Our History

The history of
Silveroc Mines

Founded in 1972, Silveroc Mines Limited quickly established itself as a cornerstone of the Canadian mining industry. It was created by a group of pioneering geologists and businessmen who had a vision for the abundant silver resources lying untapped beneath Canada's vast territories.

1980s

Despite global silver price volatility during the 1980s, Silveroc Mines managed to thrive. Their robust operational strategies and diligent management, coupled with significant mineral discoveries, kept the company buoyant and growing.

1990s

In the 1990s, Silveroc Mines expanded its operations globally, discovering several more substantial deposits. The company also began to diversify its mining operations to include other precious metals, such as gold and platinum, in response to market demand.

Company Launch - Flin Flon, Manitoba (Canada)

Silveroc Mines Limited was founded in 1972 after securing just 0.88km2 of land at the edge of Flin Flon, an internationally known hotspot for Zinc, Copper and Silver. The (relatively) tiny operation employed 65 residents and was opened by Prince Charles of Wales (now King Charles III) on September 18 1978. The operation remained functioning until it closed in 2001.

Flin Flon Expansion

In January 1981, Silveroc Mines purchased a further 2km of land previously operated by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co (now Hudbay Minerals Inc), expanding existing operations further into Flin Flon and introducing its first Gold mining operation. By the end of 1981, Silveroc Mines employed 159 men and women in Flin Flon operations.

Women in Mining

Though Canadian women were legally permitted to work underground in mines in 1978, just a month after our inception, women made up just 4% of all mining workers a year later. In 1984, Silveroc Mines announced that over 10% of all miners in its operations were women. This was the highest percentage of any mining operation in Canadian history. Silveroc Mines continues to celebrate International Day of Women in Mining on 15 June every year.

Diamond Drilling at Lingman Lake

As a joint venture with 3 other mining/exploration companies, Silveroc Mines acquired permits to begin a Diamond drilling operation at Lingman Lake, some 300km east of Flin Flon. While initially a successful operation, the venture was exhausted and terminated 18 months later in 1987.

Gold & Silver at Lingman Lake

Prior to the closure of the diamond drilling operation at Lingman Lake, Silveroc Mines secured mining rights to begin Gold and Silver mining operations. The decision to remain at Lingman Lake came when initial exploration of the area revealed high-grade deposits just 500m north of the soon-ending diamond operation. Lingman Lake operations have now expanded to a 5km2 area and continues to operate today.

Matawa Place Venture

Following a 6 year exploration operation to locate the highest grade deposits in Canada, Silveroc Mines focussed its attention on Matawa Place. The area proved rich for Copper, Zinc, Gold and Silver. Silveroc Mines secured mining rights under strict environmental conditions and the first open-pit mine was opened in early 1991. Matawa Place continues to operate today.

First International Operation

The first overseas operation began in 1998 as a joint venture with another firm which secured rights in Barra do Garças (State of Mato Grosso, Brazil). The site has since expanded with 12 further Gold mines in operation by 2015. Barra do Garças continues to prove a profitable area for Silveroc Mines with further expansion planned by 2025.

Radar Technology

In early 2019, Silveroc Mines announced the release of OCSCAN™ an in-house developed, high penetration, ground-radar device. The new technology assists exploration by providing a deeper and more complex scan of minerals deep under terrain. OCSCAN™ technology has now been licensed to another 40 mining companies worldwide.
